On Uzbekistan – Belgium political consultations in Brussels
On May 9, 2018, the sixth round of inter-MFA political consultations between Uzbekistan and Belgium was held in Brussels.
Delegations were led by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Abdujabar Abduvakhitov and the General Director of the Bilateral Political Department of the Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Belgium Anick Van Calster.
A thorough exchange of views took place on the entire agenda of bilateral relations, as well as on international and regional issues.
The sides spoke in favor of expanding inter-parliamentary contacts, assistance in establishing direct contacts between state and public organizations, economic business structures of the two countries.
During consideration of prospects for strengthening ties in political sphere, special attention was paid to the upcoming high-level contacts.
The Belgian side was informed about the results of major international conferences held in Uzbekistan "Central Asia: One Past and Common Future, Cooperation for Sustainable Development and Mutual Prosperity" (Samarkand, November 10-11, 2017) and on Afghanistan "Peace process, security cooperation and regional connectivity" (Tashkent, March 26-27, 2018).
Uzbek delegation reported on the support of the Belgium candidacy for non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for the period of 2019-2020.
At the meeting, prospects for expanding interaction in cultural and humanitarian sphere and intensifying exchanges between scientific and educational institutions were also discussed.
On the same day, the delegation took part in a workshop on "Central Asia and the European Union through the prism of international initiatives of Uzbekistan" at the Egmont – Royal Institute for International Relations.
The day before, the delegation held talks in the Belgian Senate. In addition, the delegation visited the company "Victor Buyck Steel Constructions", which organized a presentation of the construction of 23 pedestrian bridges in the city of Tashkent.
The Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Belgium hosted a presentation of trade, economic, investment and tourism potential of Uzbekistan. With participation of a number of tourism companies, a forum on tourism was organized in the Press Club of Brussels. During the presentations and exchange of views, participants – representatives of local and Uzbek travel companies, media and business circles of Brussels exchanged views on issues of increasing the tourist flow to Uzbekistan.
In addition, meetings and substantive negotiations were held with the Director General for Foreign Trade of Wallonia Export and Investment Agency (AWEX) Chantal De Bleu, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Executive Committee of "CREDENDO" Dirk Terweduwe, the leadership of the European – Uzbekistan Business and Investment Council.
