Senate holds first plenary session

The newly elected Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan held its first session on 26 January in Tashkent. President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov participated in the session.

Opening the session, chairman of the Central Election Commission Mirza-Ulugbek Abdusalomov informed the participants about the results of formation of the Senate and congratulated the senators with their election.

The senators approved the session agenda, elected the interim secretariat of the first session and the interim group for control of the use of electronic system.

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov made a speech at the session.

“It is a great pleasure for me to meet you today, express my sincere respect and good wishes, and congratulate all of you with winning the high trust of the voters and obtaining the title of the senator,” the head of the state said.

The newly formed Senate includes representatives of spheres like industry, construction, agriculture, science, culture, education, healthcare and other organizations, Islam Karimov said.

94 members of the Senate have higher education, including 18 economists, 9 lawyers, 23 engineering and technical specialists, 15 pedagogues and 8 medical workers. Among senators also are 13 candidates of science, 8 science doctors and 2 academicians.

“We have to take into consideration the vast experience gained in the country over the past five years to increase the efficiency of the activity of the Senate,” Islam Karimov noted.

The President expressed gratitude to the members of the previous Senate for their contribution to the country’s development.

The head of the state proposed candidates to the post of the Chairman of the Senate and Deputy Chairpersons.

The senators in a secret voting elected Ilgizar Sobirov as Senate Chairman and Mavjuda Rajabova and Musa Erniyazov as Vice Chairpersons.

The session participants also formed committees if the Senate and elected their chairpersons.
