Environmental problems of Central Asia discussed in Berlin

Your Excellency. We have been induced to address you with this letter because of the ambiguous statements of the Member of the European Parliament Mr. Stevenson regarding the construction of the Rogun HPS (HYDROELECTRIC POWER STATION) in Tajikistan.

The International conference “Towards the 6th World Water Forum – joint action towards water security” opened in Tashkent on 12 May. It is supported by the World Water Council in the framework of the global process of preparation to the forthcoming forum, to take place in March 2012 in Marseille (France).

Environmentalists of Uzbekistan are expressing their concern about the work of existing and construction of new large hydropower plants on rivers of the region.

From May 7 to May 9, 2009 President of the World Water Council Mr. Loic Fauchon visited Uzbekistan.

On April 28 this year the city of Almaty, the Republic of Kazakhstan, hosted the meeting of heads of founding states of the International Fund for Saving Aral. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov participated at the summit and took a floor at it. Below is the text of the address by the head of our state.

The territories, which are located on the basins of the great rivers of Central Asia – Amudarya and Syrdarya – which from of old have been named as an Interfluve, for centuries were supplied with their waters. These most important arteries have shaped the sole hydrological system of the region.
