Environmentalists of Uzbekistan are expressing their concern about the work of existing and construction of new large hydropower plants on rivers of the region.

From May 7 to May 9, 2009 President of the World Water Council Mr. Loic Fauchon visited Uzbekistan.

On April 28 this year the city of Almaty, the Republic of Kazakhstan, hosted the meeting of heads of founding states of the International Fund for Saving Aral. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov participated at the summit and took a floor at it. Below is the text of the address by the head of our state.

The territories, which are located on the basins of the great rivers of Central Asia – Amudarya and Syrdarya – which from of old have been named as an Interfluve, for centuries were supplied with their waters. These most important arteries have shaped the sole hydrological system of the region.

The Round Table discussion entitled “Norms of the international law on transboundary hydraulic facilities and regional problems of their exploitation” was held on 4 March 2009 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, by the Committees of the Parliament’s Senate on Foreign Policy and on Agriculture, Water issues and Ecology.

 

At the moment, the rational use of natural resources, first of all, water energy resources, is one of the serious problems of the Central Asian region.

These days various meetings and forums, as well as mass media concentrate on discussions with regard to grave problems of deficit of energy and water resources that touch on the interests of countries of Central Asia and Kazakhstan. Various reasons, possible consequences and ways to address the unfolding situation are being analyzed.
