Relations between the Republic of Uzbekistan and countries of the Americas

The Republic of Uzbekistan has established diplomatic relations with seventeen states of North and South America, including the United States of America, the United Mexican States, Canada, the Federal Republic of Brazil, the Argentine Republic, the Republic of Venezuela, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Jamaica, the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, the Republic of Peru, the Republic of Costa Rica, the Republic of Paraguay, the Republic of Cuba, the Republic of Guatemala, the Republic of Nicaragua, the Republic of Honduras and the Dominican Republic.

The biggest development of Uzbekistan’s bilateral relations is observed with the countries in North America. In particular, Uzbekistan and the United States are actively engaged in countering global security challenges such as drug trafficking, proliferation of WMD as well as in strengthening peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Bilateral relations of Uzbekistan with the countries of South America have recently demonstarted a marked intensification. A significant event in the relations of Uzbekistan with the Latin American countries took place in May 2009 with the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov paying the first official visit to the Federal Republic of Brazil. The negotiations, which havee been held and bilateral documents signed during the visit speak about the strong intentions of the two countries to develop a multi-faceted and mutually beneficial cooperation and their aspiration to take bilateral relations up to the level of long-term partnership. Moreover, this visit is expected to serve a «catalyst» in furthering bilateral relations of Uzbekistan with other countries of Latin America.
